About Civic Voices

The Civic Voices Initiative is a youth-centered civic arts platform that expands the ways young people participate in public life by recognizing artistic practice as a meaningful form of civic contribution.

Young people are not simply future participants in civic life. They are already observing their communities, asking difficult questions, and imagining the kind of future they hope to help shape. Civic Voices creates space for those reflections to emerge through original works of art, offering a language that reaches beyond debate and invites communities into deeper conversation.

At the heart of the initiative is the belief that civic imagination is essential to a flourishing public life. Civic imagination is the capacity to envision communities marked by belonging, dignity, responsibility, and hope, and to consider how each generation contributes to that ongoing work. Through painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and other visual forms, young artists explore the histories, relationships, and questions that shape the places they call home.

The initiative begins with the understanding that the American story is continually shaped by a carefully woven fabric of cultures, histories, migrations, faith traditions, languages, and lived experiences. Rather than assigning predetermined themes, Civic Voices invites young people to become careful observers of their own communities, creating original works that reflect the questions, histories, challenges, and possibilities they believe deserve greater public attention.

Each work begins in a particular place, yet together these works offer a richer understanding of the nation we share. Civic Voices believes that every community carries stories, histories, and perspectives that deepen our understanding of one another and strengthen our public life.

By inviting young people to contribute original works of art rooted in their own communities, Civic Voices affirms that creativity is not separate from civic life. It is one of the ways communities remember, question, celebrate, and imagine who they are becoming. Every work of art is an invitation to see a community more clearly and to imagine new possibilities for the future we are building together.

Where It Began

Civic Voices began with the vision of Nandipa Chéry, who imagined a platform where young people could contribute to public life through original works of art rooted in the communities they know best. What began as one young artist’s question has become an invitation for young people across the country to contribute their own perspectives, creating a broader conversation about belonging, responsibility, and the future they hope to help shape.

The initiative continues to grow from a simple conviction: every community has something to teach the rest of the country. Civic Voices trusts the imagination and vision of young people, believing they already possess the insight to help communities see themselves more clearly. By encouraging young artists to observe their communities with care and translate those observations into original works of art, the initiative seeks to cultivate the civic imagination that enables us to understand one another more deeply and imagine new possibilities for our shared future.
