Become a Civic Voices Artist

Civic Voices invites young artists to create artwork that explores the people, places, histories, and everyday experiences that shape civic life. Whether you work in painting, photography, illustration, collage, digital art, mixed media, or another visual medium, we are looking for artists who are curious, thoughtful, and eager to help others see their communities in new ways.

Artists are selected not only for their artistic talent but also for their commitment to careful observation, meaningful storytelling, and civic imagination.

Eligibility

Civic Voices is designed primarily for high school artists (grades 9 through 12). Exceptional students in grades 7 and 8 who demonstrate artistic promise and submit a thoughtful project proposal are also encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

To express your interest in becoming a Civic Voices artist, please submit the following materials by email to civicartinaction@gmail.com

1. Artist Introduction (75 to 150 words)

   Introduce yourself, your artistic interests, and the community or place that most inspires your work. Share what draws you to Civic Voices and why you are interested in participating in this initiative.

2. Project Proposal (100 to 250 words)

   Describe:

   • The artwork you hope to create.
   • The community or civic story that inspires your work.
   • The audience you hope to engage.
   • Why this community or story deserves to be explored through art.

   We are looking for artists who demonstrate both creative vision and a thoughtful connection to the communities they seek to represent.

3. Artist Bio (Approximately 75 to 150 words)

   Write a brief biography introducing yourself as an artist. This biography may be published on the Civic Voices website if you are selected. You may include your artistic interests, preferred artistic mediums, your school or community if you wish, notable accomplishments, and experiences that have shaped your creative journey.

4. Preliminary Sketch (Recommended)

   Include a sketch, mood board, or concept drawing, if possible. This helps us better understand your artistic vision. We recognize that ideas evolve, so your final artwork does not need to match your preliminary sketch exactly.

5. Portfolio (Optional)

   You may include up to three examples of previous artwork that demonstrate your artistic interests, creative voice, or technical skills.

Selection Criteria

Artists are selected based on:

• Artistic potential and creativity
• A thoughtful connection to a community or civic story
• Originality of the proposed project
• Curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to engage in the Creative Journey
• The potential for the artwork to inspire dialogue, understanding, and civic imagination

If Selected

Selected artists will receive the Civic Voices Artist Guide, a handbook that walks artists through every stage of the Creative Journey, from observation and reflection to a completed work of art. The guide also includes resources for developing an artist statement, preparing artwork for exhibition, and submitting materials for publication on the Civic Voices website.
